Mars mullings

For people who might be browsing and happen upon this, I'm a geologist who is a member of the Mars Exploration Rover science team. Today, I was participating in our Science Operations Working Group meeting for planning of Opportunity's activities over the weekend (no days off for robots!). Opportunity is currently sitting on the rim of Beagle crater, a small crater about 500 m away from the much bigger (~ 800 m diameter) Victoria crater. The Navcam imagery of Beagle is pretty awesome and over the weekend we will be collecting a Pancam color mosaic of Beagle and the surroundings. Beagle is named after the H.M.S. Beagle that Charles Darwin served as a naturalist on. All the target names are after species and places from the Galapagos. I thought that since we were at a crater named "beagle" that at least one of the targets should be named "Snoopy", but the rest of the team wouldn't go for it. Oh well.
